SPEED TRAINING PROGRAMS

Speed training is an important component in any athlete’s conditioning program, especially if your goal is to be world class sprinter, or simply to improve your overall acceleration ability.

Quite obviously, in a race, having superior speed gets you to the finish line faster than your opponents. In a game though, gaining an edge with speed training can often be the difference to scoring a touchdown or falling short of the goal line, stealing a base or being thrown out, or beating a defender on your way to the rack for an easy bucket. You’ve heard the expression “Speed Kills”? In sports, it is absolutely true.

So what determines your overall speed? There are two basic components; stride length and stride frequency. The fastest runners are invariably the ones who possess both a high rate of arm and leg speed, a lengthy stride, or preferably both. By increasing the force you produce from your arms and legs you can greatly improve both stride frequency and stride length. Stride frequency is developed by moving your arms and legs faster, while stride length is measured by the distance between your feet when they are farthest apart. While every runner has limitations beyond which they cannot advance, just about everyone can make considerable gains with the right program.

The best part of speed training though from a competitive athlete’s perspective is that it is easy to track and to see the gains you have realized. Try some of our custom designed programs to get that vital edge.
